Governance Delivery Group Update 10th Jan

CYP Governance Update – 10th January 2006

Jim Jenkinson – YMCA England (Midlands)
Questions:
Clarity on our definitions of governance – political/democratic processes vs trusteeship of vol / community sector?
democratic processes:  implies that children, young people, parents
and carers have access to a vote for a representative; have a right to
be elected as a representative; if elected, have a right to vote for
/ against key decisions

governance:  implies that committees/bodies who through a formal
constitution and terms of reference make a strategic decision arrived at
through a democratic process
At the meeting on 10th January it was agreed that the Delivery Group would be using the “governance” definition.
Must ask same questions to 12 yrs + and even maybe to those < 12yrs
Progress report:
1.       Mapping / Research about the existing good practice around children
& young people being involved in the governance of the voluntary
        and community sector
a)                Met with consultant will take on project – pulling together body of research and case studying a local, regional, national and international example
b)                Youth work student has begun mapping work
2.      Define what governance means to children & young people by
listening to what they think about it.
a)              Feeedback from Peer Research Group at BAYC on the type
of questions to be asked
b)              Will liaise closely with the Children & Young People Involvement Group to ensure variety of groups are asked the questions
c)              Plan to hold “focus group” type meetings and piggy-back on existing gatherings of cyp.  E.g. To use February half-term activities as a time to ask questions.
d)              Use GUitWM and WMVYSF networks
e)              Have responses from about 200 young people on governance
f)                Still to link in with British Youth Council work and use their findings (if in agreement)

  1. Assist organisations in the sector to be more accessible to children & young people being involved in their governance structures
